October 10, 2001 - St Petersburg
We said goodbye to our tour group and spent our last day touring a few more sights in this city. This shrouded tower was at the center of the Peter and Paul Fortress, a monument of military and engineering craft. The Fortress forms an irregular hexagon stretched from West to East with 6 bastions at the corners. The fortress was constructed "in quite a haste" under supervision of Peter the Great.
St Petersburg is planning to celebrate its 300th birthday in 2003, and EVERYTHING is shrouded in scaffolding, getting ready for the big event. Perhaps we'll need to make a return visit to St Petersburg to see what the actual buildings really look like. |
