October 8, 2001 – St Petersburg
Our train arrived early in this magnificent city, and we were met by our tour guide and commenced the day with a city orientation tour. Founded in 1703 by Peter the Great who desired a European-style capital, the city is made up of islands linked by bridges located in the delta of the river Neva which flows into the Gulf of Finland. St Petersburg is renowned for its superbly planned squares and wide avenues, and its spacious parks and gardens.
As the sun came up, reflecting pink and rose hues on the canals, the Hermitage complex looked very impressive. |
