 According to Victor, cucumbers are extremely sensitive to acid rain, of which there plenty here near the smelters and smoke stacks of Zaporizhia. To protect the cucumbers, growers cover them with plastic 'green houses'. This year, because of the lack of rain, cucumbers in the open field were doing very well and the 'green house' wasn't necessary.
