A unique discovery at Rano Raraku is this kneeling moai Tukuturi, which was almost totally buried when it was found by archaeologist Thor Heyerdahl's team in 1955. One legend says that this is a representation of a famous moai carver, erected to watch over future generations of the craftsmen.
