Peru 2003: By bus from Quito, Ecuador to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Day 2: The trail from the hostal to Machu Picchu took about one and a half hours. We left Wiñay Wayna at 5:10 am and used flashlights to light the way through the jungle trail. The path contoured the mountainside and dropped into cloudforest before coming to an almost vertical flight of 50 steps leading up to the final pass at Intipunku (the Sun Gate). We expected to get there just as the sun would be rising, giving us our first view of Machu Picchu. When we got there, the whole valley below us was shrouded in clouds. Other groups who had gone ahead of us were sitting around, waiting for the wind to blow the clouds away. It was cold, and we were getting chilled. Gradually each group left, heading on down to Machu Picchu. Sue found the wait particularly tough, since she had been ill much of the night, and was still feeling very poorly.
