And then we came to the southernmost tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas, to this 19th Century lighthouse. This is where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. The coastline in this area is infamous for the numerous sailor's lives it has claimed.

Portuguese seafarers named Afrika's southernmost tip "Needle Cape" because here their compass needle pointed straight to the north with no deviation.
Cape Agulhas is an extremely windy and not very inviting cape. The massive lighthouse, which was built in 1848, is worth the visit. The lighthouse is still today -- despite the satellite navigation systems of modern vessels -- fully operational. The mighty lights have a range of almost 60 kilometres.
